Home Remedies for Upper Respiratory Infections

These infections become more common in the winter season because in winter season most of the time people stay indoor and thus it spreads more easily.

Home Remedies for Upper Respiratory Infections

Here are some of the home remedies that will help in curing the infections naturally.

1. Salt Water

Salt water is one of the best remedies that helps in thinning the mucus and make it easier in clearing the nasal passages. It is very to make salt water at home. Simply take a cup of water and add one-fourth teaspoon of salt to it and mix it.

Now, take a dropper and fill it with salt water and put this solution into the nostrils. Inhale it and put your head tilted back for 3-4 minutes. Repeat the same process twice or thrice a day until getting relief.

2. Steam Inhalation

Steam is another effective home remedy that reduces the symptoms of infection like congestion and sneezing. Take a small tub full of hot water and add a few drops of peppermint oil and mix it.

Now, cover your head with a towel or sheet and breathe in the steam for about 10-15 minutes. Repeat the same twice or thrice a day. Make sure steam inhalation is not for kids.

3. Hot Drinks

Hot drinks are equally effective in getting rid of Upper respiratory infections. You can take drinks like soups preferably chicken soup, green tea or lukewarm water. These drinks speed up the healing process and cure the infection faster.

4. Honey

Honey is one of the safest remedies for both adults and kids. It contains nutrients and enzymes that help in killing the bacteria and viruses. Also, it has immune boosting and antioxidants that cures the infection and promotes healing.

Take a glass of lukewarm water and add one teaspoon of honey and one tablespoon of lemon juice in it. Mix them well and drink this syrup twice or thrice a day to get rid of infections.

5. Ginger

Ginger is an excellent immune-system booster that has anti-inflammatory properties. The antiviral compounds present in it helps in fighting with the cause of infection. You can take ginger in many ways like you either chew a small piece of ginger with some salt on it or make ginger tea with a teaspoon of honey in it.

To make ginger tea, take two cups of water and boil it. Add some slices of ginger in the water while it is boiling. Boil it until the water remains half. Now strain the water and add one teaspoon of honey to it. Mix them and drink this tea twice or thrice a day.

6. Garlic

Garlic is a popular ingredient in every kitchen because of its delicious taste, strong smell, and its several health benefits. It is low in calories and high in Vitamin C, vitamin B6, and manganese along with many other nutrients. Garlic boosts the immune system functions and reduces the effect of cold and flu.
